Did Paddington Bear’s jailbreak inspire terror suspect’s incredible escape?

Paddington Bear’s madcap escape from prison in his second cinematic outing appears to bear some resemblance to the terror suspect who fled from a South London jail this morning.

Daniel Abed Khalife, 21, was on remand at HMP Wandsworth, London, awaiting trial for terror and Official Secrets Act offences.

A Prison Service source told the Sun he escaped when he sneaked out of the kitchens by clinging to the bottom of a delivery van.

Khalife reportedly sneaked out through the kitchen while dressed as a chef, before strapping himself to the underside of a food truck, sources claimed.

While in Paddington 2, a similarly mad prison escape unfurls as the estranged bear enlists the help of fellow prisoners to carry out an equally interesting escape sequence.

While seemingly a bizarre link, social media users have already pointed out the similarity of the two prison escapes. One highlighted that Paddington escaped while “dressed as a chef”, while another suggested in response to a tweet about Khalife’s reported method: “Plotting your prison escape by watching Paddington 2”.

The bear’s plan was launched as the clock struck midnight, prompting several inmates and the Darkest Peruvian prisoner to begin their near-impawsible escape via a carved-out tunnel beneath their cells.

Like Khalife, the inmates make use of a nearby delivery service – only here they clamber over a postal skip to shimmy their way up an enormous clock pendulum.

From there they head via the kitchen and finally ascend a nearby tower, where using a makeshift giant sheet, they create a hot air balloon to carry them to freedom.

Paddington and his newfound friends found themselves on the other side of the prison wall wearing striped prison garb – only coloured lightly pink after an earlier error by the furry alleged felon.

Meanwhile Khalife was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, red and white chequered trousers and brown steel-toe-cap boots, the Metropolitan Police said, and is slim, with short brown hair. He is 6ft 2in.

The former British Army soldier would have been just 15 at the time of Paddington 2’s release.

HMP Wandsworth was put on lockdown after Khalife fled, and major airports across the country have upped their security measures to try and contain the terror suspect.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “An alert was issued by the Counter Terrorism Command earlier today in relation to Khalife through established operational briefing channels to relevant UK police and law enforcements agencies, including those at UK ports and borders.”

Commander Dominic Murphy, Head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command said: “We have a team of officers who are making extensive and urgent enquiries in order to locate and detain Khalife as quickly as possible.

“However, the public can help us as well and should anyone see Khalife, or have any information as to where he might be, then please call 999 immediately.

“I also want to reassure the public that we have no information which indicates, nor any reason to believe that Khalife poses a threat to the wider public, but our advice if you do see him is not to approach him and call 999 straight away.”
