Did Meghan Markle reveal her views on BREXIT with cryptic Instagram post?

Unlike Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, who spent most of her adulthood being groomed for a royal role and adapting to the scrutiny, Meghan Markle had a very different journey. Before she joined the Royal Family last May, Prince Harry’s wife was a successful actress and her big break was her appearance on legal drama Suits. Just like most celebrities, the Duchess had her own personal Instagram account, in which she shared glimpses of her life, travels and even her political views.

In particular, she took to social media shortly after Britons historically voted in favour of Brexit on June 23, 2016.

On July 2 that year, Meghan took to Instagram to share with her 2.3 million followers a picture of an unknown woman waving a pro-EU placard during an anti-Brexit demonstration in London.

The placard read: “If EU leave me now, you take away the biggest part of me.”

Accompanying the picture, she wrote: “If EU leave me now… #brexit #parliament #referendum #london.”

After the post went live, several users claimed it suggested Meghan was disappointed at the result of the referendum.

At the time Meghan was visiting Europe and reportedly stayed in London from the end of June until early July.

It is believed the California native met Harry during that stay, after being set up by a mutual friend for a drink with him at the private club Soho House.

Since her engagement announcement, Meghan’s opinions have had to be muted, as palace protocol forbids royals from publicly expressing views on political figures and parties.

The monarchy’s website states: “As head of state, the Queen has to remain strictly neutral with respect to political matters.”

Palace aides point out that by convention, other members of the family have to follow suit.

On social media, Meghan not only shared her Brexit stance, but also backed Hillary Clinton and attacked Donald Trump as “misogynistic” and “divisive” prior to meeting her husband.

In January 2018, she to shut down her profiles as senior members of the monarchy only have official Twitter and Instagram accounts, run by the social media teams of their households.

However, yesterday, the Duchess returned to the platform, as she and Harry launched their new official Instagram account.

Within a day, @SussexRoyal have been followed by more than 1.9 million people.

So far they have only made one post, a collection of photographs from royal trips.
