Diane Abbott’s praise of ‘comrade’ Greta Thunberg met with AWKWARD ‘jazz hands’ response
Climate change protestors Extinction Rebellion attempts to disrupt London have had little response from politicians as many were away for the Easter break. Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has had more successful, however, as she met with politicians yesterday discussing the country’s climate change deterrent intentions. Labour MP Diane Abbot spoke to Extinction Rebellion protestors in Westminster and showed her support for the activist while the crowd waved “jazz hands” instead of clapping.
Ms Abbott began by saying: “The thing I wanted to say is I think you have done an amazing job drawing peoples attention to the climate emergency.
“I also want to say this, in all the noise and kerfuffle of Brexit the climate emergency is the most important issue facing us.”
The surrounding crowd then began whooping and clapping while some chose to wave their hands in a “jazz hands” fashion in support.
The Labour MP continued: “I was very pleased to be in the group listening to our comrade Greta Thunberg with other MPs yesterdays.
“She was amazing and I give her a lot of credit as a sixteen-year-old to go around the world and speak the truth to people twice and three times her age.
“A climate change movement that looks like Hackney, looks like inner city Manchester, looks like inner-city Birmingham, will be a climate change movement that is impossible to resist.”
At the end of her speech supporters again began clapping in solidarity while more chose to wave their hands in a “jazz hand” motion.
Before speaking to the crowd, Ms Abbott appeared to have trouble using the megaphone and repeatedly asked if protestors could hear her.
She was then instructed by one of the protestors to turn the mouthpiece around and speak directly into it.
Extinction Rebellion announced that it would be ending the London climate change protests willingly on Thursday.
