Diane Abbott humiliation: Shadow Home Secretary sparks Twitter row on immigration comments

On Tuesday, Home Secretary Priti Patel announced that foreign nationals will need a job offer from an approved employer, appropriate skills for the post and be able to speak English in order to come to the UK to begin work from next year. It was part of Ms Patel’s pledge to cut annual net migration. She urged employers to prepare for “significant change” within the rules that would look to avoid firms relying on cheap labour from Europe.

But, the move angered the Labour MP who spoke on BBC Newsnight regarding her concern.

The Shadow Home Secretary said: “This is dog whistle politics, with no real concerns for society and the economy.

“The low employment salary threshold will make it very difficult to recruit people like social care workers and without social care workers from the EU, social care in London and the other big cities will collapse.

“But the Government is not concerned about that.”

Her comments, however, caused anger online.

One wrote: “Please labour this woman is clearly not well and up to the job.

“It’s not fair.”

Another said: “Newsnight balanced as usual.”

A third responded: “Labour worried about who can they get to vote for them in future elections.”

And a fourth added: “Remarkable insights there from the Shadow Home Secretary.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Ms Patel called the new move a “historic moment for the whole country”.

She said: “We’re ending free movement, taking back control of our borders and delivering on the people’s priorities by introducing a new UK points-based immigration system, which will bring overall migration numbers down.

“We will attract the brightest and the best from around the globe, boosting the economy and our communities, and unleash this country’s full potential.”

Under the new system, foreign nationals applying to come to the UK for work purposes will have to meet a strict set of criteria.

The document that announced the move said it would “reduce overall levels of migration”.

It added that the new system would be “in the interests of the whole of the UK”.
