A group of migrants have been rescued from the back of a refrigerated lorry after people heard banging coming from inside.

The vehicle, registered in Italy, was stopped by traffic police on the A24 in Worthing, West Sussex, at around 6.45pm on Tuesday evening.

It had been reported by concerned passers-by who said they could hear people inside.

Sussex Police later confirmed that 10 people, all thought to be illegal immigrants, were taken away and checked by paramedics.

They added that the lorry driver was arrested on suspicion of immigration offences.

Footage of the incident shows crates of green vegetables stacked by the exit, with only a small hole in the centre.

Those rescued, who appear to be all male, can be seen sitting on a garden wall as police officers offer them water and search their bags.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: ‘Police stopped a lorry containing 10 people, suspected to be illegal immigrants on the A24 at Findon Valley just before 6.45pm.

‘They were checked over by paramedics and escorted away by police to be handed over to Home Office Immigration Enforcement and Border Force.

‘The driver was arrested on suspicion of immigration offences and taken to custody.’
