Storm Christoph: The River Irwell overflows following rain

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for rain in Derbyshire suggesting the conditions pose a danger to life. River levels have risen significantly with the Wye in the Peak District bursting its banks.

Water has reached its highest point in ten years at more than one metre above normal.

A yellow weather warning is also in place for ice in the region until 10am adding to treacherous conditions. Road closures are also in place.

Intense rainfall is causing the River Derwent to swell, with it expected to reach as high as three metres above normal water level in areas such as Matlock.

Homes across the county are likely to be flooded with transport delays into Thursday, the Met Office has said. Heavy, wet snow is also predicted.

Thousands of homes were also evacuated in Manchester, Merseyside and North Wales amid torrential downpours.

Police and fire crews evacuated properties in East Didsbury, West Didsbury and Northenden on Wednesday.
