In an opinion piece for The Telegraph, Camilla Tominey took a dig at “deluded” remainers for supporting Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and lambasting Ms Truss. Recently, Russia’s foreign minister dismissed Ms Truss as “deaf” and “unprepared” as British diplomatic efforts to prevent conflict in Ukraine came under attack in Moscow.

Ms Truss was mocked by her counterpart in a joint press conference after failing to make a breakthrough during a high-stakes visit to Moscow, the first such trip by a British foreign secretary in more than four years.

After their meeting Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s veteran foreign minister, described their meeting as like “talking to a deaf person”.

“It’s like they’re listening to us but not hearing,” Mr Lavrov, who has served as Russia’s top diplomat since 2004, said.

Ms Truss hit back at further insults from Mr Lavrov, who went on to characterise the meeting as a “conversation between deaf and dumb”.

She said she “was not mute in our discussions” and that she had “put forward the UK’s point of view on the current situation and the fact that as well as seeking to deter Russia from an invasion into Ukraine, we are also very resolute in pursuing the diplomatic path”.

According to reports, when the Foreign Secretary was insulted by her Russian counterpart, elite Remainers took the side of Moscow.

Ms Tominey said: “Just look at the reaction of other extreme Remainers to Sergey Lavrov’s attempts to undermine Foreign Secretary Liz Truss – an event which coincided with More-Peas-Norma’s self-serving speech at the Institute for Government, the establishment think tank.

“Lavrov, who has been Russia’s minister of foreign affairs since 2004, already had form on the world’s stage for being, to quote one of George W Bush’s officials, “a complete a——-”.

“Known as ‘Mr Nyet’ (Mr No) in Russia, Moscow’s whisky-drinking, chain-smoking top diplomat has carved out a reputation for effing and blinding as he has slavishly devoted himself to Vladimir Putin’s cause.

“I’m not sure what is more worrying, that these anti-Brexiters and Communist sympathisers fell for Lavrov’s lines, hook line and sinker – or that they were aware of what they were doing, and did it anyway?”

“Yet regardless of seemingly being the Kremlin’s answer to the Duke of York, some useful idiots in Britain chose to lap up his criticism of Truss, whom he described as ‘deaf and mute’ following unconstructive talks over Ukraine.”

However, sources close to Ms Truss insisted the visit had been a success and that Ukraine had been “very happy” with the “posture” she had taken.
