Dean Saunders: Ex-Liverpool striker who refused to take drink-drive test wins appeal
Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has won his appeal against a prison sentence for refusing to give a roadside breath test after he was spotted driving erratically in Chester city centre.
Saunders was jailed for 10 weeks but was freed after serving only one day.
He had admitted failing to comply with a roadside breath test and failing to provide a breath specimen.
The 55-year-old was stopped in May this year after police saw the driver of an Audi A8 speeding and failing to give way at a roundabout, causing another vehicle to brake.
Saunders, who also played for Aston Villa and Derby County and was capped by Wales 75 times, looked crestfallen in August when he realised he was going to jail.
But on Friday, Judge Steven Everett quashed the immediate prison sentence and suspended the 10-week prison sentence for 18 months.
Saunders was also ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work in the community.
The father of-three’s 30-month road ban remains.
