A teacher at a school for deaf children allegedly threw a 9-year-old disabled student to the ground.
Surveillance footage showed a female teacher at the St Rita School for the Deaf in Evendale, Ohio, walking in a hallway and picking up a girl. In another clip, the Catholic school teacher holding the girl drops her hard on the ground, then dusts of her hands and storms off.
A man is shown at the end of the video watching in disbelief.
The victim’s mother, Alexys Wells, claims ‘it wasn’t accidental’.
‘No matter what way you watch it, it’s very obvious that that was a malicious act,’ she told WCPO.
‘When I had first seen the video, I was so outraged that I had to take a minute. I was completely speechless, couldn’t really focus on what I wanted to say.’
Wells said her daughter reported the incident through sign language and reenacting the scene.
‘She’s completely non-verbal so the very first thing that she did was demonstrate what had happened with her teacher,’ Wells said. ‘She just continuously was like, “my teacher threw me, my teacher threw me, my teacher threw me, she was angry, she threw me.”‘
Wells said the school did not inform her about what happened until the following day and only referred to it as a ‘minor incident’.
The school president ‘said she was having issues with transitioning,’ Wells said. ‘Because of her brain disorder, she does have issues with transitioning between subject to subject or task to task.’
It was not clear what occurred in the classroom before the episode in the hallway.
The unnamed teacher has been suspended. The school is overseen by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.
‘Any actions by a St Rita School staff member that do not exemplify respect and dignity for the children entrusted to our care are addressed promptly,’ an archdiocese spokesperson told the New York Post.
‘The safety of students and staff at St Rita School is of paramount importance.’
