David Schwimmer 'lookalike' arrested after failing to appear in court
Abdulah Husseini was supposed to attend a hearing at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court on 18 December after being charged with theft and fraud following an incident in September.
When he failed to appear, the 36-year-old – who was compared to Friends character Ross Geller after CCTV footage issued by police went viral – was made the subject of an arrest warrant.
Lancashire Police has announced that he was taken into custody in Wimbledon, London, last Thursday – and it has emerged that officers in the capital had also been seeking him.
Husseini was originally been arrested in west London in November, bringing to an end a police appeal that had received global attention – even from Schwimmer himself.
The actor had posted a video on Twitter “proving” he was not behind the alleged theft in Blackpool, with the clip showing him leaving a shop carrying a crate of cans in an exact copy of the CCTV.
He wrote: “Officers, I swear it wasn’t me. As you can see, I was in New York. To the hardworking Blackpool Police, good luck with the investigation.”
Schwimmer added the hashtag #itwasntme to the post.
Those who have followed the case so far may be disappointed that a newly released custody photo of Husseini bears far less resemblance to Schwimmer than the original footage did.
He is alleged to have stolen a coat, a phone and a wallet from a Mr Basrai’s World Cuisines restaurant in Blackpool, and has been remanded to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
