Dad of 'Jihadi Jack' defends son's plea to return to UK

The father of ‘Jihadi Jack’ has defended his son in his first appearance since been convicted of funding terrorism.

Jack Letts’ mother and father tried to send him money after he left the UK and reportedly joined Isis in Syria.

Organic farmer John Letts, 58, who walked free from court after being given a suspended sentence, appeard on Good Morning Britain today alongside Piers Morgan.

The presenter said that when he first heard that ‘Jihadi Jack’ wanted to come back to the UK, his first thoughts were ‘you should rot out there’.

However, dad John, who said his conviction ‘destroyed him’, disagreed, adding that he ‘doesn’t think Jack was ever a member of IS’.

He said: ‘I understand that feeling if people have signed up to be a terrorist and share the sentiment they should be punished severely for their crimes and put in jail.

‘[But] I don’t think Jack was ever a member of IS, a lot of it was disputed on a factual basis.’

Piers argued that Jack had ‘quite openly’ said he was a member of ISIS during an interview – and asked if the father was ‘in denial’.

John added: ‘If that is true, I agree he should be punished and put on trial.

‘I’m not in denial, that interview was done as a result of torture.

‘He [Jack] says he was brought out of solitary confinement and told what to say. He was a fool, naive stupid, but he went out to help.’

The father was later asked by presenter Susanna Reid what he thought the outcome would be in Jack’s plea to come home.

Jack said in an interview, which took place in October last year but was not broadcast until after his parents’ trial had ended, that he realised he had been ‘an enemy of Britain’ but added that he had made ‘a big mistake’.

Dad John replied: ‘That’s a very painful question.

‘I probably have to accept the chances of him coming out in a good way, is not so great. I’m worried he will die in his prison cell, his kidneys are failing and he is receiving very difficult treatment.

‘[But] I have no idea, no one seems to care about him.’
