Dad-of-11 dies at the altar just minutes before getting married
A dad-of-11 died at the altar minutes before he was due to get married, leaving his bride-to-be heartbroken.
Paul Wynn, 57, was due to wed his partner of 21 years, Alison Wynn last Friday.
But he died as she was walked down the aisle by their son, despite desperate efforts to save him.
Paul learned he had cancer just eight days earlier.
Doctors delivered the devastating news that the disease was in his pancreas but had spread to his liver and lungs.
The freelance photographer was given between six weeks and two months to live.
The couple – who have five children, Sandy, 20; Tarquin, 15; 13-year-old Marcus, 13; Louise, eight; and four-year-old Poppy – brought forward their big day but their dream of tying the knot was cruelly snatched away.
Alison, 38, who changed her name by deed-poll, told how family have been left crushed by the tragedy.
‘If I had known we didn’t have long I would’ve tried to arrange the wedding for the beginning of the week,’ she told Ayrshire Live.
‘He never actually got any treatment.’
Alison sensed something was wrong when she got to the wedding venue, Saltcoats town hall in Ayrshire, Scotland.
‘By the time I got to him I called his name a couple of times,” she said.
‘He didn’t turn round, he didn’t look at me and I realised there was something wrong and I started breaking down and I started shouting his name and we knew something wasn’t right.’
First aiders rushed to help Paul but he could not be revived.
‘It feels like only yesterday that it happened. I’m having to get up and moving every day for the sake of my children but I can’t eat.
‘Paul and I lost a child in 2004 after I had a miscarriage so it gives me a bit of comfort that he’s up there with our child.
‘His mother passed away in 2020 so at least he’s with her now too,’ she added.
Paul initially contacted his GP in May after constantly bleeding from the naval and losing an alarming amount of weight.
He began to struggle to eat and eventually was only able to consume liquids.
An endoscopy revealed he had three hernias, with a CT scan confirming he had cancer.
He died just over a week later.
Paul popped the question to Alison in October 2019 and the couple originally set the date for July 16 this year.
Alison, who met Paul in 1999, described him as a ‘fantastic dad’, adding how the ‘kids were his life’.
“Paul loved going out and taking pictures of anything and everything,” she said.
“We were his life, he would do anything for his kids. He would move heaven and earth for his kids and everyone loved him.
“He would give you every last penny he had.”
The family have launched a fundraiser to help pay for Paul’s funeral, which is due to take place on Tuesday, June 6 at Stevenston High Road Cemetery.
They have so far reached almost half of the £2,000 target. To find out more and donate, click here.
