Shane Gilmer, 30, died after Anthony Lawrence fired the crossbow twice – it damaging his liver and kidney and became embedded in his spine. Lawrence also shot Mr Gilmer’s pregnant partner Laura Sugden in the head but she miraculously survived, Hull Live reports.

Mr Gilmer’s inquest heard he made emergency calls lasting around half an hour while his girlfriend attempted to get help from other neighbours.

He told the call operator: “I really, really wanted this baby, I really wanted it.

“I think I am going to die.

“They’ve got my girlfriend, they’ve taken her. I collapsed on the floor, it’s taken ages to get downstairs.

“Oh god. Oh god. Oh god. I can’t hear you I think I am going to die. I need to say something. I love my children.”

Mr Gilmer suffered a cardiac arrest at Hull Royal Infirmary and died after the attack on January 12, 2018.

Shane Gilmer, on the phone to the 999 call operator

The inquest, expected to last several days this week, heard Lawrence, 55, broke into the house, in Southburn, East Yorkshire, through the loft and waited for the couple to return home from a restaurant before striking.

After the attack, the thug smashed Mr Gilmer’s mobile phone in front of him so the dad had to drag himself – with an arrow in his torso – downstairs to reach a telephone.

The dispute had happened after Lawrence had been served with an eviction notice after Mr Gilmer and Ms Sugden made a complaint about a smell of cannabis from his property, Hull Coroner’s Court was told.

Mr Gilmer, a housing officer, told the call operator his attacker was “really dangerous” and that there was “blood everywhere”.

He told the emergency services he needed someone to “get here and find” Ms Sugden, and could be heard on the call saying: “I am in so much pain there is an arrow sticking out my side. Oh god, I love her so much, I’m going to be sick.”

He continued: “She was upstairs because I heard her scream and he was standing there with a f***** bow and arrow. I need her to know I love Laura,” he told the call operator.

“I need to tell my mum and dad I love them. I had fallen out with them last week but I really love them.

“I love Laura and I don’t know where he’s taken her. He’s got a little blue car. A Vauxhall. I can’t believe this has happened. I am in so much pain. My whole right side has gone numb.”

Getting increasingly concerned about waiting for the emergency services to arrive, Mr Gilmer said: “We live in the middle of nowhere but the longer we are leaving it he could be doing anything to her.

“I am covered in blood. I can’t move. I love her so much. I can’t believe how much blood there is – we are having a scan for the baby to find out what it is.

“I need them to find her, I don’t want them to help me.”

Mr Gilmer was unaware that Ms Sugden was actually in a neighbouring house telling another 999 operator about the attack, and how she wished for an ambulance to tend to Mr Gilmer first – not her, the inquest heard.

As officers smashed their way through the couple’s front door, the call recorded Mr Gilmer shouting: “Help, my girlfriend is missing”.

Officers proceeded to reassure Mr Gilmer that Ms Sugden was safe and well as the transcript recorded a male officer telling him: “Laura is alright, she is safe buddy”.

They were both dashed to hospital.

Ms Sugden survived after “life-saving treatment”, the inquest heard.

A manhunt was launched for Lawrence, also known as Tony Howarth, after the attack and his body was later found in a caravan in rural North Yorkshire.

The inquest into Mr Gilmer’s death continues.
