Changes were made to the code last month and included a focus on priority rules on UK roads. Under the new rules, the Department of Transport (DfT) said that drivers now have less priority – giving pedestrians more right of way.

The three amendments are:

When people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give way.

If people have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road, pedestrians have priority and the traffic should give way.

People on the road must give way to people on a zebra crossing and pedestrians walking and cycling on a parallel crossing.

Failure to abide by the new rules could leave motorists with a £200 fine and six points on their licence.

But after an investigation revealed that many drivers were ignoring them, angry Express.co.uk readers slammed the changes.

Sceptical wrote: “The new Highway Code rules were crafted by pro-cycling activist groups.

“No car representation was allowed, and when the consultation document was created, 70 percent of replies were orchestrated from cycling groups again.

“This is woke, virtue signalling lawmaking at its worst.

“Delivering for the minority not for the majority.”

Rob Ceuppens raged: “If this is true this needs to be investigated.

“How can they make new rules like this without representation from all road users?”

CHiPs raged: “The Highway Code used to tell pedestrians, STOP, look right, look left, and right again. If it’s safe to do so, cross the road.

“Now it says, just step out, the cars will stop. Madness.”

Yarrumalag said: “It’s a bad rule made by woke idiots who probably can’t drive a car and have no idea of braking distances.”

Leicestershire Live reporter Corey Bedford found that the new rules were not being widely adhered to when he put them to the test on Narborough Road in Leicester.

Mr Bedford discovered that many drivers would not give way to him at two junctions in Leicester.

He then went to Harrow Road and Gaul Street in the city and wanted to see if a car would stop to let him cross the road.

Mr Bedford discovered that during a period of 40 minutes only one driver spotted him and let him cross.

The rest of the vehicles, 10 in total, all drove by without stopping.

However, the test turned out to be a dangerous exercise.

Many of the vehicles did not give way to Mr Bedford, forcing him to run in order to avoid being hit.
