Under the proposed roadmap out of coronavirus restrictions, set out by Boris Johnson in February, all social distancing measures will be lifted by June 21. Sources familiar with the Covid vaccine rollout in the UK have shared they hoped all those over 50 years old will have been given both doses of a jab by then.

From May 17, indoor visits and overnight stay will be permitted in England, but physical contact is still prohibited.

A source familiar with lockdown plans has said the expectation is that people would be able to resume full contact by June 21.

Prof Jonathan Van-Tam, the deputy chief medical officer, said in a Downing Street press briefing close contact between people who have been fully vaccinated after two weeks is “incredibly safe”.

However, the source said there is “no appetite” in the Government to give those who have been vaccinated different advice than those who haven’t been, as it could be seen as discriminatory to younger groups not yet offered a jab.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the source said physical contact like hugging would be allowed on the basis that the most vulnerable had been vaccinated.

They told the outlet: “From May 17 people will be able to meet indoors, and by June 21, we would expect that the vast majority – and hopefully all – those in priority groups one to nine will have had both doses.

“The thinking is that by this point people would be safe to hug, and that it then comes down to a matter of individual judgment.”

According to the outlet, ministers hope every person in the top nine priority groups, which includes everyone over 50, will be achieved by the end of June.

Under the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown, most rules on social contact outdoors are set to be lifted on May 17.

Two households or groups of up to six people will be allowed to mix indoors from that date, and pubs, restaurants, cinemas, hotels, B&Bs and children’s play areas will be allowed to have people inside their establishments.

But all legal limits on social contact are set to end on June 21, and according to the Government “until this point, people should continue to keep their distance from anyone not in their household or support bubble”.

A Government source told the Telegraph they were optimistic many of the current restrictions will end in June, but the exact exact shape of the new rules is still being considered based on Covid cases and data.
