Despite widespread vaccine rollout in the UK, coronavirus cases, hospitalisations and deaths have been on the rise in recent weeks. Across the Atlantic, the infectious Delta coronavirus variant has also contributed to a surge in cases in the USA.

Are Covid cases increasing in the UK?

According to the UK Government’s coronavirus dashboard, 30,838 people tested positive for COVID-19 on August 24.

Over the last seven days (August 18 to 24), the UK has recorded 234,853 Covid cases in total.

Compared to the previous seven days (August 11 to 17), the UK recorded 27,907 more Covid cases in the most recent week, a rise of 13.5 percent.

On August 24, 174 people died within 28 days of a positive Covid test.

Over the last seven days 705 people have died, a rise of 57 deaths and 8.8 percent higher than the number of deaths recorded in the previous seven-day period.

The latest data on patients admitted to hospital outlines that 6,089 people were admitted in the seven days of August 14 to 20.

Compared to the previous seven days, hospital admissions increased by 9.1 percent, with 506 more people admitted than in the previous week.

How do UK Covid cases compare to the USA?

Our World in Data charts shows the UK is actually reporting a higher number of new Covid cases per million people than the USA.

As of August 23, the UK reported a rolling seven-day average of 483.80 cases per million people.

In comparison, the US reported a rolling seven-day average of 453.47 cases per million people.

Although the data suggests the rate of new Covid cases in the UK is higher than in the US, the US is still grappling with rising case numbers in many states.

Cases are rising in 42 American states and according to USA Today, this is the lowest number in six weeks.

Deaths are also increasing in 43 states, which is the worst number since December.

The spread of the Delta variant has put significant pressure on the US healthcare system.

Dr Robert Jansen, chief medical officer at a major trauma centre in Atlanta, Grady Health System, told CNN it was seeing a “tsunami of patients coming into the emergency department.”

Mary Mayhew, CEO of the Florida Hospital Association (FHA), told CNN on Friday that Florida’s current surge is “fundamentally different” to others as the Delta variant has gained momentum.

Ms Mayhew said: “These are healthy, young 20-year-olds, 30-year-olds who, because of the aggressive nature of the Delta variant, are now being hospitalised.”

To date, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that 51.6 percent of the US population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

In total, 60.9 percent of the population has had at least one dose of a Covid vaccine.
