Speaking to LBC’s Tom Swarkbrick, Doctor David Nabarro who is the Special Envoy on Covid-19 for the World Health Organisation issued a stern warning that coronavirus is “capable of causing resurgence” in Western Europe like the one seen in India. He demanded more “caution” and said people should be “a little bit scared” of what covid is capable of. But he concluded that ultimately areas such as India with lower immunisation rates will be more impacted.

Dr Nabarro said: “I don’t think any country that has had a really very large surge and then adopts precautions can be really accused of being cautious.

“This virus is still capable of causing resurgence all over Western Europe.”

The WHO medic went on to add that people should remain cautious and even “scared” of the capabilities of the virus.

He continued: “I think everybody should be cautious and in fact a little bit scared.”

Nabarro added: “After all, the images from India are really very acute and many of us have got relatives in the whole region, it’s not just in India, it’s other countries in the region.

“We’ve got to remember that the virus doesn’t pick and chose it could affect any human, anywhere.”

He went on to stress deep concerns about similar tragedy’s unfolding in other areas of the globe and called for further caution.

The doctor said: “My absolute hope is that we do not get scenes like India has experienced anywhere else in the world, because that is horrible.”

India: WHO’s Dr David Nabarro urges UK to share vaccines

He then went on to raise concerns about the virus overcoming current vaccines, which could then affect the UK.

Dr Nabarro said: “But I am being realistic, this virus is capable of mutating, it could then beat the vaccine and come in and affect even people in a country like the UK.”

But he concluded: “Where you don’t have high levels of immunisation, or you have large numbers of people not immunised this virus is capable of surging.

“Just like what we are seeing in the images from New Delhi.”

The doctors concerns come as India recorded a record 400,000 covid cases on Saturday alone.

3,523 deaths were officially recorded in the past day but the real figure is expected to be much higher because many deaths go unreported.

India has now recorded a heartbreaking 216,000 deaths from the virus which are continuing to rise as the country is gripped by a surge in cases.

Worldwide deaths from coronavirus now stand at 3.19 million with 152 million recorded cases.
