The UK Government restrictions stress that foreign travel rules will be revised on May 17 at the earliest. But Cyprus’s deputy tourism minister, Savvas Perdios, has already confirmed that vaccinated Britons will be allowed to vacation in the country from May 1.
Those who have been vaccinated with one of the jabs authorised by the European Medicines Agency will be able to enter the country without having to provide a negative coronavirus test.
But under Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plans for the easing of lockdown restrictions, the earliest possible date that Britons can go on overseas holidays is May 17.
Home Secretary Priti Patel recently warned that it was “too early” to start looking at international holidays.
England’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer Professor Jonathan Van-Tam explained the rules for international travel would depend on European countries’ progress with their vaccine rollouts.
The EU Commission is set to propose legislation to create an EU-wide Digital Green Pass on March 17 to allow residents to travel safely.
Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said: “It should facilitate Europeans’ lives.
“The aim is to gradually enable them to move safely in the European Union or abroad – for work or tourism.”
But Greece and Spain have highlighted their intentions to do a deal direct with the UK when it comes to travel.
Spain’s tourism minister Fernando Valdes has said the country is looking at setting up a “green corridor” for inoculated UK holidaymakers.
His Greek counterpart, Haris Theoharis, also said that UK tourists will be able to enter the country with or without a Europe-wide vaccine passport.
Mr Valdes said: “Right now we have discussions with our colleagues in the UK. For us, the British market is our main market.
“Since we are a member of the European Union, the solutions have first to be part of the discussions in the EU.
“Obviously, if that cannot be reached, we will be thinking of green corridors that can help us restart tourism flows.”
