Couple on birthday vacation in Alaska disappear from their Airbnb
Investigators are searching for signs of a Tennessee couple who vanished from their Airbnb over a week ago while on vacation in Alaska.
Jonas Bare, 50, and Cynthia Hovsepian, 37, were reported missing on Saturday, August 12 after disappearing from their Airbnb in Fairbanks.
The couple were visiting Alaska to celebrate Bare’s 50th birthday, according to posts the couple made on social media.
According to investigators, Bare and Hovsepian never checked out of the Airbnb and never made it to their return flight to Tennessee. They made no attempts to contact family members about extending their stay in Alaska.
Fairbanks Police officers found the couple’s luggage untouched at the Airbnb.
The couple were last seen on Thursday, August 10 on a hiking trail near Chena Hot Springs Resort in Fairbanks.
The resort is about 60 miles outside of Fairbanks, in the Interior Alaska wilderness.
According to the Alaska State Troopers, Hovsepian is ‘visually impaired’ and uses a cane for assistance.
Alaska State Troopers and Alaska Wildlife Troopers have begun searching the vast Interior region using helicopters, drones, ATVs, and search dog teams.
The sparsely populated Interior wilderness is home to ‘moose, bears, wolves, and Dall sheep,’ according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
‘I’m not going to get lost like I did 10 years ago in Australia and Katoomba Range,’ Bare said in an ominous post on Facebook. ‘If a Kodiak [bear] gets me, I’ll consider that an honorable death.’
Bare and Hovsepian are not the first American tourists to mysteriously disappear this year while on vacation.
In February, 80-year-old vacationer Wilmer ‘Dino’ Trivett disappeared from his camper in Todos Santos, Mexico.
Two months later, his body was found buried in a shallow grave in Baja California.
In June, a 29-year-old woman from Chicago disappeared while on a trip to Japan.
A month later, her family confirmed to Fox 32 News that they found her location and were working to bring her home safely.
