A British couple are among the first people ever to learn of a Lottery win over Zoom.

Delighted duo Adrian and Deborah Gelston scooped £100,000 playing People’s Postcode Lottery after their address in Rugby came up trumps.

Winners usually get a knock at their door as seen on the TV adverts – but because of social distancing officials have launched in a new way of breaking the news.

The couple, who have been together for 30 years, had their cheques revealed by People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Matt Johnson over video call.

On hearing the amazing news, thrilled Adrian, 49, who works at a local school, said: “Oh my god! That’s fantastic! I think I love you Matt!”

And 48-year-old wife Deborah added: “I’m going to cry. I really can’t believe it, it’s amazing.”

With Adrian turning 50 this year, the couple said they plan to spend some of their winnings on a luxury holiday in the future.

Deborah explained: “We went to the Maldives a couple of years ago for our 25 wedding anniversary and we’d love to go again.”

Adrian added: “We planned it for a really long time. It was meant to be a once in a lifetime trip, but we’ve been wanting to go back. Now it’s actually on the cards!

“We’ll also need to go to Vegas for my 50! We’ve been before with friends and enjoyed it so much. We looked at it earlier in the year but couldn’t afford it. Hopefully we can go at some point in the future.”

Adrian and Deborah netted £50k each, thanks to them both playing with a ticket in their postcode CV21 1XE.

After having a few hours to get over the shock, Adrian said: “The shaking has settled down. It was an amazing feeling when I saw the cheque, it’s all going in now.

“The first thing I did was phone my mum who was in tears. You’ve made our lives!”

People’s Postcode Lottery costs £10 a month to play and there are guaranteed winners every day. People play with their chosen postcode and are automatically entered into all draws.

People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Matt Johnson said he was over the moon for the lucky couple. He went on: “It sounds like Adrian will be having a fabulous 50 birthday thanks to the win! Even though I was unable to visit them in person, I feel very lucky to have shared this moment with them and see how happy they both were.”

A minimum of 32% of ticket sales goes directly to charities and players of People’s Postcode Lottery have helped raise more than £500 million to date for good causes across Great Britain and internationally.

This draw was promoted on behalf of People’s Postcode Trust. The trust provides project-based funding in Great Britain to good causes which promote human rights, combatting discrimination, and prevent poverty.
