The brazen diners ordered the “most expensive food and wine” at Sergio’s, a restaurant in Guisborough, North Yorkshire, on Friday evening. They devoured the lot and left without paying their £80 bill.

But owner Sergio Murtas has wanred the pair need to “settle the bill” or the venue’s CCTV images will be sent to Cleveland Police, reports Teesside Live.

Regulars at the eatery, which serves Italian food, have suggested the owner “names and shames” the couple by posting the CCTV on its Facebook page.

Mr Murtas, though, says he “can’t be sure if it was deliberate” and “wants to give them the benefit of the doubt.”

The diners weren’t regular guests at the establishment

A statement on the restaurant’s Facebook page reads: “For the couple that racked up an £80 bill at 7pm tonight and then just left; we have you on CCTV and will get the police involved, in the case that you do not come back and settle this bill as soon as possible.”

Mr Murtas, who opened the restaurant 10 years ago, said today: “They haven’t got back to us. We can’t be too sure if was deliberate.

“They weren’t regulars and they did order the most expensive food and wine on our menu, therefore we thought it was deliberate. I haven’t yet contacted the police yet.

“They did order king scallops as starter, fillet steak and a bottle of one of our best white wines and another couple of drinks.

“I just want to give them the benefit of the doubt.”

People on Facebook, including regulars at the Italian restaurant, have voiced their disgust at the couple.

“Some people have the cheek of the devil,” one person wrote, “I don’t understand how they have the audacity to just get up and leave without paying.”

“It’s terrible, don’t eat out if you can’t afford it. Businesses are struggling just the same as individuals,” wrote another.
