Couple close Chinese takeaway and quarantine themselves after holiday to China

A couple have closed their Chinese takeaway and put themselves into a two-week voluntary quarantine after returning from a holiday in China.

Frankie Fan and Yunyan Wu run the New Diamond in Grimsby and spent the Chinese New Year in China with Yunyan’s parents.

They did not stay in Wuhan, the area worst affected by the coronavirus outbreak, but spent the entire time inside as a precaution.

Both say they feel well since returning to the UK, but decided to go into a self-imposed quarantine to put their customers at ease.

They had been in Zhan Jiang City in Guang Dong province.

A notice to their customers on the door of the restaurant says they will remain closed until the quarantine is over.

The takeaway had been due to open on February 6 after the Chinese New Year holidays.

Frankie told Grimsby Live: ‘We stayed in all the time we were on holiday and did not go out. But because there is coronavirus we will be staying at home for 14 days.

‘We feel ok and confident there has been no infection. We feel very well. But we wanted to ease people’s worries.’

He added: ‘We have enough food and we spend most of the time on the computer.’

Frankie and his wife did not go out during their holiday but had to travel back from Zhan Jiang City to Heathrow with many other Chinese visitors.

They have not been in contact with anyone since returning to Scartho. Frankie, 54, and Yunyan, 47, opened The New Diamond two years ago after moving from Portsmouth where he ran a Chinese restaurant.

They said in a statement: ‘Due to the outbreak of coronavirus and to easeoff people’s worries we will follow the protocol by staying at home for 14 days in quarantine.

‘This shows our care and responsibility to our community and people in Grimsby. In additional note, the place we stayed in China was Zhan Jiang City in Guang Dong province, not Wuhan City in Hubei. It is less affected by virus. so we are confident we have not been infected by any virus or bacteria.

‘After the quarantine, New Diamond will reopen as usual on Friday, February 21, 2020. We are sorry if the delay will cause any inconvenience to our customers.

‘And finally our thoughts and prayers to all people who are affected by this virus.’

Coronavirus has now claimed the lives of more than 900 people, with tens of thousands of cases reported around the world.

Four more patients in England tested positive for coronavirus today, bringing the total number of cases in the UK to eight.

What is the coronavirus and where did it start?

Coronaviruses are a family of diseases which include the common cold and the virus which caused Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which originated in China in 2002 and killed nearly 800 people around the world.

The virus causing concern now is a new strain which has made the jump from animals to people.

It causes flu-like symptoms and can make it hard for people to breathe, causing viral pneumonia in severe cases.

Over 900 people worldwide have now died after contracting the illness.

How does it affect the lungs?

The virus is more likely to progress into a severe illness or prove fatal among older patients or those with weakened immune systems.

As it is a viral illness, antibiotics will not help and there is no known cure or vaccine.

The Foreign Office has warned against all but essential travel to mainland China, and British Airways has subsequently suspended flights there.

They have not advised against travel to Thailand and Japan, which have both seen cases of the virus, but warned there are enhanced quarantine procedures at entry points to Japan such as airports and ports.

If you’re booked onto a flight with BA and are scheduled to fly between January 26 – February 23, you can request a refund.

In order to do this, get in touch with them directly through the BA website.

They also offer the option to rebook to the same destination, although it is not known when flights to mainland China will resume.
