Councillor who shouted 'f**k off' in meeting blames fat cat climbing curtains

A councillor has apologised after he screamed ‘what the f**k are you going on about?’ as a colleague tried to speak during a virtual meeting.

Chris Randall blamed the foul-mouthed outburst on his cat – said to weigh about one and half stone – that had been clawing at his new curtains.

The Lib Dem abruptly grabbed centre stage during a Hull City Council meeting to discuss council tax.

In the clip another councillor, Daren Hale, can be heard outlining what discounts are on offer to council tax payers when out of nowhere Mr Randall let’s rip.

‘What the f**k are you going on about?’ he yells before someone else asks ‘who was that online please?’ To this seemingly innocent question Mr Randall responds with a ‘f**k off’.

Mr Hale then says: ‘Can Councillor Randall shut up when I am speaking please?’ as other councillors react with varying degrees of shock and amusement.

Later, a sheepish-sounding Mr Randall explained what happened. ‘Sorry about that,’ he said.

‘It wasn’t that I wanted to speak on this particular motion. It was me who swore earlier.

‘I need to apologise to Daren Hale I think. I was actually struggling with my nine kilo moggie crawling up my brand new curtains that cost me £170 and I totally lost it and didn’t realise I was still on the microphone.’

Mr Hale graciously accepted the apology and opted to move on instead of probing too closely into the explanation behind the outburst.

Mr Randall’s rant is the latest in a long-line of mishaps since the pandemic began a year ago.

With all meetings forced online, many have fallen foul of the unmuted microphone.

In a similar incident last week, John Baldwin, a councillor on Windsor and Maidenhead Borough Council, could be heard muttering something that sounded like: ‘You’re doing it now, f*****g nut.’ He later said the comments had been directed at the family dog.

Meanwhile, the councillors on Handforth Parish Council became the year’s most unlikely celebrities as clips of their online meeting went viral.

Councillors were shown directing a huge amount of anger at Jackie Weaver, a local official, who was said to have ‘no authority.’
