Professor Tom Solomon told Sky News that the idea of a second wave of coronavirus coming from Europe is a distraction. The University of Liverpool Professor stated that a second wave is avoidable if the UK Government continues to take action to combat local outbreaks.
Professer Solomon said: “Well we are seeing increasing cases in Europe, but I think it is a bit of a distraction to be concerned about this idea.
“I have heard talk of a second wave coming from Europe, we do not really need anything to come from Europe, we have our own virus, our own cases in the UK and as lockdown eases those are going to increase.
“So, we have to do things locally to stop that from happening.
“I think you only get a second wave if you do not do anything about the cases that you are discovering and we are now doing things about the cases that we are discovering.
“We’re having to reverse some of the easing of lockdown, and we are having to implement measures and I think this is going to be the patten over the next few weeks and months.
“We are going to see increased cases as long as we can react locally that will stop a bigger outbreak across the whole country.”
The UK was originally placed in lockdown in March to protect the NHS from being overwhelmed from the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
In a bid to stimulate the economy the Government has slowly eased restrictions across Britain.
However, in recent weeks there has been a surge in local outbreaks of COVID-19, the most severe outbreak in Leicester has resulted in the city being placed in a local lockdown for over a month.
At the time of writing, Britain has the twelfth-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world.
The UK has recorded more than 304,000 coronavirus cases at the time of writing.
The death toll in Britain is currently over 46,000.
