Sainsbury’s has lifted buying restrictions on “thousands” of products to help those shopping for vulnerable people who are unable to leave the house.

Supermarkets recently rationed popular items including toilet paper and pasta as they battled to keep shelves stocked, with customers panic buying in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a new letter to customers, Sainsbury’s chief executive Mike Coupe announced he is lifting some of those restrictions after receiving feedback that the limits are stopping people being able to buy items for others.

Items such as pasta, long-life milk, antibacterial products and some tinned and frozen goods will continue to be limited to two per customer for the foreseeable future.

However, Mr Coupe stressed that stock levels across Sainsbury’s stores are “now much better”.

His letter says: “You wrote to tell me that product limits were a barrier to being able to shop for other people.

“We understand that it can be difficult to buy what you need and shop for someone else with the three-item product limit.

“We have now lifted buying restrictions on thousands of products and hope that this will help more of you to shop for others.”

The retailer is also going to offer priority delivery slots to an additional 150,000 elderly and vulnerable customers – a week after supporting 450,000 people in these groups.
