The WHO has warned “the pandemic is accelerating”, as they announced countries across the globe reported more than 150,000 virus cases on Friday, the largest daily increase in cases so far. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus cautioned against easing lockdown restrictions, despite the need to kick-start economies.

Mr Ghebreyesus told a virtual press conference: “The world is in a new and dangerous phase.

“Many people are understandably fed up with being at home.

“Countries are understandably eager to open up their societies and economies.

“But the virus is still spreading fast. It is still deadly.

“And most people are still susceptible.”

So far over 9million coronavirus cases have been identified worldwide.

The rate of infection is surging in the Americas and parts of Asia, with the WHO warning the rising case counts in South Asia and the Middle East were a cause for concern.

The warning by the leading health agency comes as Boris Johnson prepares to announce the next stage in easing lockdown restrictions today.

At the daily coronavirus press briefing, the Prime Minister is expected to announce the reopening of pubs, restaurants, hotels, hairdressers and cinemas from July 4.

Mr Johnson is also expected to reduce the two-metre social distancing rule by half.
