Epidemiologist Neil Ferguson was quizzed on the length of time the lockdown measures could continue in Britain by Unherd’s Freddie Sayers. Professor Ferguson stated that in order to keep the death rate low the lockdown would have to continue until a vaccine was able to control the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, something that is at least a year away.   

Mr Sayers said: “In terms of length of time, are we talking about years here?

“How long until we could see life get back to normal?”

Professor Ferguson replied: “That is dependent on what decisions are made.

“If you make the decision to suppress transmission indefinitely then maybe there will be some build-up of population immunity.

“Those measures would have to be in place until we have the means to control the virus with drugs or vaccines.

“I don’t have greater insight than anybody else.

“It is likely to be in the best case a year before we have a vaccine, it could be considerably longer than that.

“If you are willing to tolerate a higher level of transmission then you will have much more coronavirus deaths and indirect deaths but at some point, it will probably come to an end.”

At the time of writing, Britain has the sixth-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world.

The UK has more than 150,000 cases in total.

The death toll in Britain is currently higher than 20,000, and the UK has become the fifth-worst affected country in the world.

Over 400 people died as a result of coronavirus yesterday in the UK.

The death toll has reached more than 200,000 at the time of writing.

More than 880,000 people have recovered from the coronavirus across the globe.

The United States has the highest amount of COVID-19 cases in the world with more than 985,000 confirmed cases.
