Coronavirus latest: Mortuary built by East London school as death toll soars

On Friday authorities announced another 684 deaths, the highest number of fatalities in 24 hours since the crisis began. Workers in Waltham Forest are preparing three white tents to handle the corpses of those who die from the virus.

It spreads across nearly 10 acres of land, and used to house rubbish trucks.

The site is being prepared at Low Hall Depot in Leyton.

The UK is bracing for the pandemic to escalate, with a projected death toll of up to 20,000.

The site is expected to up and running by Sunday at the earliest.

Neighbouring the makeshift mortuary are houses, a primary school and a sports ground.

The reveal of the second site comes after the Mail Online reported Manor Park was housing a morgue the size of two football fields.

Waltham Forest Council usually utilises the space for refuse trucks.

A sewage plant is nearby, and the space is normally used to keep those trucks aside from the general public.

The site is located 6 miles away from the newly opened NHS Nightingale Hospital.

The temporary hospital will hold up to 4,000 victims of the virus.

NHS social worker Lynn luges lives nearby to the now occupied site, and told the Daily Mail that residents were not informed of its purpose.

She said: “’We have not been told what they are for.

“I don’t know why that is.

“But they have to be stored somewhere and a respectable level of care has to be shown to the dead at the same time.

“This is a quiet area and the depot is tucked away from the main roads, so I suppose that is why they have chosen it.”

Speaking to the Daily Mail a source inside the depot said: ‘It has all been done with quick precision and the buildings went up very quickly.

“There are lorries arriving with machinery to keep the bodies cold and from decomposing and boxes and boxes of uniforms and technical apparatus probably for morticians.

“A set of road markings and overlay have been put down so the vehicles carrying the bodies can pass over the land which is rough in many places.

“I would say there have been around 100 people involved in building the morgues over an area of about 100 meters.

“The contractors have just got on with the job with minimum fuss.”

The UK has seen 38,168 cases of coronavirus since the outbreak began.

Of those who contracted the virus, 3,605 have died.

As of Friday, the UK has official overtaken China’s reported death toll of 3,322.
