Coronavirus horror: ‘Desperate’ Brits left to ‘fend for themselves’ as they plead for help

British nationals trapped in Peru have sent “desperate” pleas to the Government to help them get home. The Peruvian Government has prohibited all flights, putting the country into coronavirus quarantine, leaving many in the lurch. Tanya Yilmaz and Neus Rodriguez, both stranded in the capital Lima, told Sky News they felt “flabbergasted” and “astounded” at their treatment by the UK authorities.

Ms Yilmaz said: “We felt that it was crucial to underline how desperate the situation is for British nationals because our attempts contacting via phone calls on all of the helplines and online platforms have

“We’ve been held on phone calls for an hour or more, phone calls have been cut off and emails haven’t really had a response at all.

“From Friday 16, we found out flights were cancelled. In a desperate attempt, we queued for over two hours with other passengers at the airline building.

“We were told there was no chance so we raced to the British embassy and it was also closed.”

Ms Rodriguez added: “Although the state of emergency came into affect from midnight, it was closed.

“Since then, we’ve been trying to get through to anyone through any medium.

“You would expect the British embassy in Lima to have been open and we were just flabbergasted and astounded that the doors were closed to us for 15 days.

“The whole purpose of the embassy being open is to help stranded British nationals.”

She continued: “I don’t speak the language, and our hotel closed down and we were asked to leave.

“Although given another accommodation, the message here is if you do not speak the language and you are in a foreign country, you are left to fend for yourself.

“Luckily we have electricity while other areas in Lima are falling short of water, power and food supplies.”

Ms Yilmaz also told Sky: “Turning up at the British embassy was our last resort.

“The message here is that we feel that we have been ignored and abandoned.

“What are the British authorities doing to get everybody that is a stranded UK citizen back home.

“To their jobs, their pets, their families.

“I mean, it’s just shocking what’s happening out here.”
