Coronavirus fury: NHS being ‘undermined’ by ‘inadequate’ Government strategy, expert warns

NHS and other frontline workers are being put at risk by the Government’s “inadequate” coronavirus plans, according to the National Pensioners Convention (NPC). The NPC has called for MPs to step up on priority protection for local health and care workers. General Secretary Jan Shortt spoke to Express.co.uk about what officials must do to aid frontline workers.

When asked if the Government’s announcements to ramp up testing were good news, Ms Shortt told Express.co.uk: “They’re on the right path if they can actually reach it.

“We’ve had young people affected and dying from coronavirus.

“I think what the Government has done so far has been completely inadequate.

“If they can get that testing up to speed then that is exactly what people are asking for.”

She continued: “We’ve got hundreds of thousands of very dedicated medical staff, care workers and care homes.

“They’re totally not protected and totally unaware whether they have the virus.

“So if they can get the testing up then good.

“But if they don’t then the NHS will continue to be completely undermined, just like they have been by a decade of austerity.”

The NPC has also revealed that they have received reports of COVID-19 scams targeted towards the elderly.

Ms Shortt told Express.co.uk: “The scammers are having a field day at the moment.

“We’ve had reports of people coming to the door and saying ‘we’ll go shopping for you’ and then taking the money and not bringing back anything.”

She continued: “I had a phone call myself, asking me to take part in a survey for COVID-19.

“What it was actually was selling pre-paid funerals and power of attorney.

“It wasn’t about COVID-19 at all, it was about their business.

“There’s online fraud as well with people trying to sell masks and protective equipment.

“They just take the money and nothing shows up.”
