The Mayor of Manchester told LBC that the advertised UK anti-lockdown protests are ‘the height of selfishness’ during a furious rant. Mr Burnham added there will have to be a police presence to deal with the protests and that there are a hundred things better for police officers to be doing during the coronavirus crisis.
Mr Burnham said: “My goodness, this is the height of selfishness.
“We’ve had over 100 deaths in Greater Manchester over the last seven days and around 750 new cases.
“What do these people think they are doing? What point are they making?
“I don’t think anybody will have any sympathy for what they are planning to do.
“We will have to have some police presence in place and there are a hundred things better that those police officers could be doing.”
Last month, the Mayor of Manchester warned the Government that releasing the lockdown on a region by region basis would cause chaos.
He told talkRADIO the Government’s testing capacity would have improved if they had taken a decentralised approach towards tackling the coronavirus.
Mr Burnham said: “Regarding testing, I think if there was a more decentralised approach I think we could have got it out into the locations more quickly.
“What they have gone for is big testing sites.
“They are often not very convenient for NHS staff and care workers.
“If we had a more localised model that could have helped.
“It is about learning from what we have been through so far so that we prepare the country as best as we can for what comes next.”

He continued: There is some light at the end of the tunnel, but nobody should underestimate how difficult recovery will be over the next few months.
“If we did have a seat at the table there is one message that all of the Mayors would give to the Government.
“Do not even consider a region by region release from lockdown because that would be the most chaotic of all.”
