‘Corbyn is toxic for hard-working Britons’ MP says Labour voters refusing to back leader

The Conservative Party candidate was speaking to Mike Graham on talkRADIO about canvassing for the Conservatives in the northeast. He said that despite the northeast being a traditional Labour region the opinion on the doorsteps was that they couldn’t vote for Mr Corbyn. Mr Francois also labelled the Labour Party leader as “toxic”.

The talkRADIO host asked: “How are you finding it out there on the doorsteps?

“Is it a land of frustration, a land of hope, a land of pessimism, what are people saying to you?”

Mr Francois replied: “Well I know we are not allowed to mention individual seats because of electoral law so I will try and avoid that but I was up in the northeast earlier this week because my former researcher is standing in a constituency.

“So I was up there and I was out canvassing in Labour’s absolute traditional heartland and the thing that I got again and again on ‘Labour doorsteps’ was people saying I am not going to vote for Corbyn.

“They weren’t saying I’m not going to vote for Labour interestingly they were saying I’m not going to vote for Corbyn.

“I have had by the way exactly the same on lots of doorsteps in Essex in multiple constituencies in Essex by the way.

“People in the northeast in many senses have a lot in common with my constituents in Essex.

“They’re hard-working and patriotic and for them Corbyn is toxic.”

Mr Graham said: “It is interesting because if this particular poll in the Times today is anywhere near correct even if it is only half right and the `Tories end up with a 34 seat majority that would be probably better than any of you could of hoped, wouldn’t it?”

The Conservative candidate said: “Well the PM’s case has been we need a Conservative majority, a clear majority in order to get the bill through so that we can leave the European Union.

“Churchill famously said one is enough but people can fall ill or whatever so you want a bit more than that.

“You don’t really want a majority that turns up in a taxi.”

Polling expert John Curtice has revealed a shocking prediction for the upcoming December election, after telling the BBC that Boris Johnson is on course for a surprise triumph in Scotland.

He said: “There was clear evidence for the Scottish Conservative vote having risen back up in Scotland.

“It had been running at 20 percent but according to this poll it’s back up to 28 percent – just short of what the party got in 2017.

“Not that any of this came at the expense of the SNP. The SNP are still running at around 40 percent and are holding their own.

“It does mean that many of the seats that the Tories won from the SNP, that are marginal, those Tories should be able to hang on.”
