Corbyn humiliated as Labour MPs refuse to applaud his speech ‘Don’t all cheer at once!’

Jeremy Corbyn was publicly humiliated after ended his rebuttal to Boris Johnson to virtually no reaction from his own benches in the Commons. The outgoing Labour leader was dramatically shunned by his own MPs as the Commons debate on Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal got underway. The only reaction to Mr Corbyn’s speech as he sat down was laughter from the Government benches.

Responding to the silence, one Conservative MP heckled the Labour leader, shouting: “Don’t all cheer at once.”

The embarrassing moment comes as Mr Corbyn refused to step down following the catastrophic election defeat last week.

He has vowed to stay on until March, when the party elects its next leader.

To the outrage of several shadow cabinet ministers, Mr Corbyn also confirmed that Labour MPs will vote against the EU Withdrawal Agreement Bill.

Defending the move, he said “We remain certain there is a better and fairer way for this country to leave the EU.”

The Labour leader branded Boris Johnson’s Brexit bill “a roadmap for the reckless direction in which the government and our prime minister are determined to take our country”.

Ending his speech, Mr Corbyn told MPs: “We need an approach that puts jobs and living standard first and builds the strongest cooperation with our European neighbours, based on openness, solidarity and internationalism.

“That is the approach that will bring an end to the Brexit crisis and bring our country together.”

Mr Corbyn warned that the Brexit deal could be used as “a battering ram” to deregulate the UK and leave it open “to the excesses of the free market”.

However, in a major blow to his already crumbling leadership, MPs from Leave-supporting constituencies broke from his demand to oppose the bill.

Emma Lewell-Buck became the first Labour MP to publicly confirm she will defy the whip and vote for the Government’s Brexit bill later.
