Contact lenses recalled over fears they could 'scratch your eyeballs'

Contact lens wearers have been told to return a faulty batch of lenses, which could cause ‘irritation, redness and damage to the surface of your eye’.

The 1-day Acuvue Moist for Astigmatism lenses by Johnson & Johnson’s have been recalled by the Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

The regulatory body is asking customers to check whether they have bought an affected batch, and to return it to their suppliers.

It is believed that there are dangerous particles on the lenses or in the solution, which may not be visible to people.

Customers can check if their lenses are affected by looking at the lot number of the lens boxes against the list published by Johnson & Johnson in the company’s field safety notice (FSN).

Lot numbers can be found on the back or the side of the carton of 28 lenses as well as the foil cover of individual lenses.

Mark Birse, MHRA group manager, device safety and surveillance, said: ‘Whilst the risk is low, the MHRA takes the safety of the medicines and devices we regulate very seriously.

‘It is therefore important that as many customers as possible are made aware of the need to check their lenses for these lot numbers.’
