Community hero hasn't missed a Metro delivery in 20 years come rain or shine
Come rain or shine, pensioners living in a Southampton neighbourhood have been receiving their Metro newspaper thanks to a community hero.
Atif Khan has been delivering your favourite newspaper to the elderly and less able people in his area for the past 20 years.
His brother Amad, who is also based in the city and works as a neurosurgeon at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, said Atif has not missed a day, whatever the weather.
‘Atif and I have been fans of the Metro newspaper since we were kids,’ he told us.
‘Sadly, my brother had birth asphyxia and has learning difficulties meaning that he cannot read or write.
‘Despite this, he has always loved the newspaper and for the past two decades, has been collecting it from the local station and hand-delivering it to elderly and less able people in our neighbourhood who do not have access to it.
‘Rain or shine, he delivers and has not missed a paper round in 20 years. I was visiting him and saw how despite the horrible weather, he was out spreading the Metro word.
‘He delivers the papers for no cost, of course, and does this purely out of the kindness of his heart.’
Amad contacted the Metro about his brother’s work – and we cannot be more grateful that he did.
