Cleaner drank Stella, crashed car and slapped doctor on first day at work

A cleaner’s first day at work didn’t quite go to plan.

Mum-of-two Jane Evans, 36, had been hoping to make a ‘good impression’ but she ended up injuring two colleagues after crashing her car while she was drunk, Cardiff Crown Court heard.

She lost control of her black Mini Cooper while driving her workmates Jessica Mullins and Nicole Kemp, to Gabalfa, Cardiff, after they’d finished a job on November 30 last year.

The women screamed at Evans to slow down moments before she spun the car when approaching a bus that was pulling out.

The car was thrown into the air and then smashed into a fence and tree before coming to a stop.

Evans’ ‘erratic’ behaviour continued when an ambulance arrived and she slapped GP Dr Ray Monsell who was volunteering as a medic at the time.

Prosecutor Jason Howells said Evans was angry after the doctor grabbed her left hand when she pushed him away and told him: ‘Who the f**k are you holding with your left hand? F**k off.’

The doctor was not hurt but said he was upset after being hit.

Evans told a police officer at the scene she’d drunk two cans of Stella after work but she eventually failed a breathalyser test and had 94mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, with the legal limit being 80mg.

She was detained by police and later admitted in court to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, assaulting an emergency worker, and drink-driving.

Defence barrister David Pinnell said Evans wanted to make a good impression on her first day but her low self-esteem had led to her drinking.

He said: ‘It was totally out of character and that can be the only explanation for the way she drunk, drove, and behaved in that way.’

Ms Mullins broke her neck in two places, suffered bruising and had a cut to the head which caused a haemorrhage and a bleed on the brain resulting in clots which had to be drained.

In a victim personal statement she said her injuries left her unable to work and she was scared to get into cars.

She added her children were also afraid to hug her just in case they hurt her.

Ms Kemp suffered broken ribs and bruising to the body.

On Thursday Evans, from Gabalfa, Cardiff, was jailed for 18 months and was disqualified from driving for two years and nine months.
