Meghan’s announcement she is set to become a published children’s author has been widely welcomed. However, it also sparked unfounded claims by some online users the Duchess had taken inspiration from another book.

These allegations have been branded “beyond untrue” by a source.

They told Us Weekly: “Meghan’s books theme is … personal to her and Harry’s life, and the fact that she would need to plagiarise are beyond untrue.

“The accusations of plagiarism are ridiculous and an attack on Meghan for notoriety.”

These allegations appear to have been raised after it came to notice Meghan’s upcoming work share a word in the title with another children’s book.

The Duchess of Sussex’s debut story is titled The Bench and focuses on the father-son relationship.

A book published in 2018 by Corrinne Averiss is titled The Boy on the Bench.

While both stories do include a child and a bench, Ms Averiss’ book clearly diverges from the topic chosen by Meghan.

The book published in 2018 focuses on a child named Tom, who is “not brave enough” to join other peers in the playground and remains seated on a bench next to his dad.

Ms Averiss herself took to Twitter to dismiss claims of plagiarism.

She wrote: “Reading the description and published excerpt of the Duchess’s new book, this is not the same story or the same theme as The Boy on the Bench.

“I don’t see any similarities.”

As revealed in a statement released earlier this month on Archewell.com, Meghan’s book is “about the special bond between father and son—as seen through a mother’s eyes”.

Explaining this story is very close to her heart, the statement continued: “Inspired by her own husband and son, The Duchess of Sussex’s debut touchingly captures the evolving and expanding relationship between fathers and sons and reminds us of the many ways that love can take shape and be expressed in a modern family.”

The book has been illustrated by Christian Robinson. Among the illustrations, there is a ginger-haired soldier hugging his son while the mother looks on in tears.

Commenting on the release of book, Meghan said: “The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born.

“That poem became this story. Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolour illustrations that capture the warmth, joy, and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life; this representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens.

“My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with mine.”

Meghan’s book is published by Random House Children’s Book in the US and Puffin in the UK and it will be released on June 8.

The front cover presents Meghan’s name and title – Duchess of Sussex.

While this is Meghan’s debut as an author, she is well known for having a knack for writing.

During her years as an actress, she created and run the popular lifestyle blog The Tig, which she shut down before marrying Prince Harry.

In 2018, she wrote the foreword for the cookbook Together by the Hubb Community Kitchen.

And in September 2019 she co-edited the issue of British Vogue.
