City worker fined for tirade at woman eating boiled eggs on commuter train
A city worker has been ordered to pay £1,500 following an angry tirade against a fellow commuter.
Samantha Mead launched an aggressive rant at Erika Stoter after she opened her breakfast of boiled eggs on the 6am service from Chelmsford to Liverpool Street.
The victim admitted that the eggs gave off a strong smell on the Greater Anglia train and people had complained in the past.
However, on this occasion she said she felt intimidated and had been the victim of racism.
Mead gave dirty looks to Erika before moving towards the train door to get away from the pong.
Erika, who is originally from South America, tried to gesture an apology for the guff but Mead marched towards her ‘quickly and aggressively’.
She said: ‘The woman asked me if I spoke English and I said no because I was scared and confused. I thought she would stop …she said, “You are disgusting”.’
Mead, from Manningtree, Essex, said the eggy smell made her feel nauseous and claimed she said the food was disgusting rather than Erika.
Mead, who said she was taking tablets for a medical condition at the time, then asked her ‘do you want to go outside?’
Erika replied: ‘Don’t you think you are quite old to be doing these kind of things?’
She contacted police once she arrived in London but admitted that another commuter had previously complained about her smelly eggs.
She closed her Tupperware box to try and contain the whiff.
Erika was asked why she eats eggs in public so early in the morning and responded ‘I have to eat at that time because of my diet’.
Mead denied losing her temper, but was found guilty of intentionally causing harassment, alarm or distress.
She was fined £750 and ordered to pay £750 in compensation and was cleared of a racially aggravated public order offence, the Standard said.
