Eight school children and two teachers are trapped in a chairlift 900 feet in the air in Pakistan.

One of the cables snapped as the group were travelling to school in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday morning, according to rescue official, Bilal Ahmad Faizi.

An urgent rescue effort is now underway.

Tanveer Ur Rehman, a local Battagram district official, said: ‘The chairlift is hanging 1,200 feet (365 meters) above ground.

‘Rescue efforts are impossible without a helicopter, and experienced rescue officials are needed to ensure the rescue goes smoothly.’

Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar ordered all ‘dilapidated and non-compliant chairlifts’ to close immediately.

District Police Officer Sonai Shamaroz said the children are all ninth-grade students, Associated Press of Pakistan reports.

Many students who live in remote parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa rely on the chairlifts to take them to school.
