Children hit by online sex crimes every HOUR
Home Secretary Sajid Javid will announce a new crackdown on child abuse, urging closer co-operation between police, the National Crime Agency and Government. He will say ministers must do more to protect victims. New figures from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) today reveal online sex crimes against children, including grooming, sexual communication and rape, were committed almost every hour last year. Babies yet to reach their first birthday were among the victims of 8,224 offences recorded by police. This does not include paedophiles caught looking at child pornography. Peter Wanless, NSPCC chief executive, said: “Behind each offence is a child suffering at the hands of sex offenders and we know these figures are the tip of the iceberg. Far too many children are drowning in a sea of online threats.”
The UK is believed to be one of the largest consumers of live-streamed abuse and more than 144,000 British paedophiles share images of abused children on the “dark web”, according to the National Crime Agency.
Mr Javid, right, will say in a speech: “The Government must build on our existing work to stop all forms of child sexual abuse and support all victims and survivors.
“Later this year we will publish a national strategy covering our comprehensive response to all forms of child sexual abuse.
“I have been resolute in my mission to protect our kids, but I remain determined to do more.”
The number of crimes recorded by police has more than doubled in four years, says the NSPCC.
