Fire crews were called to the blaze at around 7:15pm Wednesday evening after flames were seen rising from the social club in the town’s Bulwark area and remained on the scene until shortly before 9pm.

Nearby homes have not been evacuated, but some residents have been seen dousing their homes with hosepipes as hot ash coated the area, Wales Online has reported.

The building was scheduled to be demolished and had been closed for some time.

The plan was to build a Lidl supermarket on the site.
