The Prince of Wales reportedly has plans to slim down the core working royals when he takes the throne, which could include Edward and Sophie. Earlier this month a royal expert questioned whether Edward and Sophie’s had a future role in the Firm.

On the latest episode of the Daily Express’ Royal Round-Up, Daily Express royal editor Richard Palmer told host Pandora Forsyth: “The other big question mark is over Edward and Sophie. Many people had assumed that they would have a role.”

He claimed that, according to a royal source, there was an assumption that non-working members of the Royal Family would have “no role” under King Charles.

In response, Express.co.uk ran a poll from midday on Wednesday, August 18, to 11am on Saturday, august 20, asking readers: “Should Edward and Sophie have a place in a slimmed-down monarchy?”

In total, 8,058 readers cast their votes with the vast majority, 93 percent (7,528 people), answering “yes”, Edward and Sophie should have a place in a slimmed-down monarchy.

A further six percent (503 people) said “no” they should not, while just 27 people said they did not know.

In the hundreds of comments left below the accompanying article, it was clear readers valued Edward and Sophie in the Royal Family.

And username goart wrote: “Sophie and Edward are a breath of fresh air very appealing couple and should be part of the future firm.”

Some readers argued that Charles would be “foolish to exclude them from a slimmed-down Royal Family.

Another, username Here Goes said: “Yes! Edward and Sophie have proven themselves to be arch supporters of Her Majesty and the monarchy itself.

“Charles will be making a huge mistake if his future plans do not include them as working royals.”

While username Goldielover wrote: “Of course they should. There are far too many engagements.”

However, other readers commented that it was Charles’s decision for the future.

Username Angelpave said: “When Prince Charles is King it would be up to him whether he needs their support or not.”

Edward, the Queen’s youngest son, is currently 14th in line to the throne and is a full-time working royal.

Most recently, Edward and Sophie attended several events at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham alongside their children.
