Prince Harry leaves Balmoral after death of Queen Elizabeth II

Members of the close family of Queen Elizabeth II rushed to be by her bedside when her health reached a critical point. Her son and heir, then Prince Charles as well as Anne, Princess Royal were already in Scotland at the time.

Prince William, Prince Andrew and the Earl and Countess of Wessex also arrived to Scotland in an RAF plane and subsequently at Balmoral Castle in a car driven by the Duke of Cambridge.

The Duke of Sussex was the last one to arrive at the Castle, and he only got there after the event of the Queen’s death was made public.

Earlier that day, a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan had said that the couple would go to Scotland together, however, the Prince arrived at Balmoral alone, without his wife by his side.

It is understood that this was after an intervention from Charles, with a phone call made when Harry was still at Windsor.

A source told the Sun: “Charles told Harry that it wasn’t right or appropriate for Meghan to be in Balmoral at such a deeply sad time.

“It was pointed out to him that Kate was not going and that the numbers really should be limited to the very closest family.

“Charles made it very, very clear Meghan would not be welcome.”

Prince Harry returned to Windsor the next day and was seen arriving at Frogmore Cottage to reunite with his wife, with the grief and sadness evident on his face.

Moreover, Prince Harry was reportedly refused a seat on the RAF plane that took the other royals to Balmoral.

There were just seven passengers on board — William, Andrew, Edward and his wife Sophie, plus three aides, the Sun reported.

That would leave 12 empty seats on the Dassault Falcon jet. It is understood the royals had all travelled from their homes near Windsor Castle and would have passed close to Frogmore Cottage.

Prince William was less than half a mile away at Adelaide Cottage while Prince Andrew was three miles away in his Royal Lodge home. Prince Edward and Sophie were a 15-minute drive away at Bagshot Park.

Harry also left Balmoral separately from the other royals, in another sign of the bitter rift within the family.

Harry and Meghan reside in the California, US after stepping down from working members of the Royal Family. They caused a stir in 2020 when, in an interview with Oprah they accused members of the Firm for racism.

Mourning British people commented on the couple’s dispute with the family. Christine Evans, 68, from Shropshire, said she hopes the royal family will be brought closer together in the wake of the Queen’s death, and that Harry and Meghan can heal their alleged rift.

She said: “Obviously it’s a very sad occasion but sometimes it brings people together – and family have got to stay together.”

Pat Miller, a Birmingham resident, had been inside the city’s St Philip’s Cathedral to light a candle in memory of the Queen.

She said: “I’m so sad that she didn’t see Meghan and Harry and the two children. That’s my upset. She’s had a wonderful life. A good age. It’s sad the way it’s ended. It was a big shock to me”.

Harry and Meghan’s foundation, Archewell, was contacted for comment.
