Dated around 1940, Charles shared the black and white photo of his father on Instagram, where he can be seen surrounded by his fellow Eton students as two boys cut a small tree with a hand saw, while four others watch on.

Charles, a father of seven, captioned the post: “My father (kneeling – to the right – with saw in hand) and @eton.college school friends, helping the war effort in around 1940.”

The description accompanying the photograph, which is barely legible due to the image being over 80 years old, reveals that John was assisting in “forestry work” at Harlestone, West Northamptonshire, as part of their vacation.

“Etonain woodsmen,” the description begins, before it adds: “They are paid sixpence an hour. Working the saw are Viscount Althorp (right) and H. Bruce.”

Although the former Earl Spencer can only be seen side-on as he saws at the tree, many fans were quick to notice his likeness to his son Charles, while others pointed out the resemblance to Prince William’s eldest son, Prince George.

Taking to the comments section of the image, fans were quick to point out the similarities between John and the nine-year-old prince, with one writing: “I think Prince George looks like you and your father when he was young.”

More fans echoed the sentiment, with a second adding: “Even side on, you can see the strong Spencer family gene resemblance. Thank you for another great personal photo memory, I really enjoy your Insta page & the Spencer history over the centuries.”

Others couldn’t help but think the photo of his father was actually Charles himself. “You look just like your father,” one person wrote.

“Goodness, I thought that was you!!”, another added.

It’s also not the first time a likeness has been drawn between Charles, his late father John, and Prince George.

While sharing a photo in January this year to mark what would have been his father’s 99th birthday, fans were quick to make the connection again, with many saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”.
