Charles Spencer marks St Patrick’s Day with solemn WWI tribute photo – ‘Such pride’

Charles, brother of Princess Diana, took to Twitter to post a picture of the Irish Guard at Buckingham Palace in 1914. His post came shortly after Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, posted a video celebrating the Irish holiday.

Through a black-and-white image, Charles shared a piece of royal history.

He wrote in the caption: “This is an image of St Patrick’s Day from 1914, sent by an Army friend: Lord Roberts and Colonel Fitzclarence leading regimental proceedings for the Irish Guards.

“Both holders of the Victoria Cross, they were (as my friend points out) dead within the year.”

One follower called it a “wonderful picture”, to which Charles replied: “Fabulous, isn’t it? Such pride.”

William and Kate paid a more light-hearted celebration of St Patrick’s Day, with the Duke of Cambridge trying his hand at speaking Irish.

He began the greeting saying, “Beannachtai na Feile Padraig oraibh,” followed by Kate, who said: “We’re delighted to wish you all a very Happy St Patrick’s Day.”

William quipped to his wife: “How come you got that easy bit?”

Also featured in the video message was US president Joe Biden, who marked the occasion with a call to Micheál Martin, Irish Taoiseach.

Queen Elizabeth II also got involved with the celebrations, writing a letter to the Republic of Ireland’s President Michael D Higgins.

She wrote: “On the occasion of your National Day, I would like to convey to Your Excellency my congratulations, together with my best wishes to the people of Ireland. This year marks 10 years since my visit to Ireland, which I remember fondly, and it marks a significant centenary across these islands.

“We share ties of family, friendship, and affection – the foundation of our partnership that remains as important today as 10 years ago.”

Her Majesty signed off with “Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh go léir”, meaning “Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all of you”.
