Prince Charles has been the longest heir apparent in British history. The future king recently celebrated his 73rd birthday, but his accession may still be some time away, as the Queen appears to have no intention of stepping away from royal duties anytime soon.
However, over the last few months, there has been increasing speculation around the future of the Royal Family.
This is because Queen Elizabeth II, 95, was forced to pull out of several royal engagements owing to ill-health.
After cancelling her appearance at a Remembrance Sunday service due to spraining her back, Her Majesty has been carrying out “light-desk based duties”.
These duties include going through her daily Red Box, and conducting virtual audiences via video-link from Windsor Castle where she is undertaking rest, as per doctor’s orders.
As concern grows for the Queen’s health, there are also questions being raised about the future of the monarchy at the end of her reign.
Royal historian Dr Ed Owens claims that William and Kate will be key when her reign ends.
He told Express.co.uk: “Once Queen Elizabeth II is gone, all eyes will be on them.
“In many ways, Charles’ reign matters less than what comes after him.
“The Cambridges are the real ‘draw’ now for the monarchy.”
According to YouGov, Charles ranks as the sixth most popular royal, behind both William, Kate, and also his sister Anne – who recently also beat her brother when it comes to the number of royal engagements carried out so far this year.
A survey conducted by YouGov in November, also notes that just over a third – 34 percent – of participants think the royal will make a good king.
While 33 percent think he will not, and the final third say they are unsure.

Dr Owens added: “Even if people are uncertain about Charles’ abilities as sovereign, they’ll endure his reign as they will want to see William and Kate eventually crowned king and queen.”
He said: “The couple are already carefully developing their public images in anticipation of the Queen’s death and when that day comes, we will start to see a lot more of the Cambridge family as a whole.”
William and Kate appear particularly popular with the nation after a YouGov poll found that William is liked by 62 percent of Britons, with just 15 percent expressing their dislike.
While 43 percent of participants in another poll from YouGov said Kate “definitely will” make a good Queen, and 33 percent said she “probably will”.
On Friday, Kensington Palace shared an image of the family of five from a trip to Jordan earlier this year.
The image is to be used as the family’s Christmas card this year.
The adorable snap was shared on the couple’s social media accounts alongside the caption: “Delighted to share a new image of the family, which features on this year’s Christmas card.”
In the snap, Kate wears an olive green dress and sits next to her husband William, who wears a polo shirt and shorts.
The couple is surrounded by their three children, Prince George, eight, Princess Charlotte, six, and Prince Louis, three.
