The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince of Wales met and thanked NHS staff at St Austell Healthcare. The Cornwall centre opened six years ago after local health officials combined four closed or under-threat surgeries. It has pioneered “social prescribing”, giving patients non-medical treatments such as art classes or trip to an allotment, in a scheme pioneered by the Prince of Wales’s medical adviser Dr Michael Dixon.

The Prince told staff: “We have heard much about the heroic work being done in hospitals during this pandemic, but I believe it is also time to thank those of you in general practice and primary care for the heroic work that you have been performing.

“This nation owes each and every one of you, here and everywhere else, a huge debt of gratitude.”

Charles and Camilla thanked a receptionist, social worker, volunteers and care home staff.

Health workers devised a Help at Hand app for patients needing mental health support and food delivery.

Charles added: “You are a shining example of what is possible.”

Earlier, Camilla met volunteers from the Hive project who have served thousands of hot meals during lockdown.
