Charles in stitches after fan invites him to spend night in her tent

The Royals greet adoring crowds in walkabout on the Mall

King Charles was left in stitches by one royal fan’s cheeky request as members of the Royal Family stepped out along the Mall to greet well-wishers and campers in a Coronation walkabout. Thankfully, the rain held off on Friday afternoon, giving die-hard royal fans who have been camping outside Buckingham Palace for days a chance to meet King Charles and the Prince and Princess of Wales in the flesh.

Prince William and Princess Kate took to one side of the Mall, while Charles made his way along the other, stopping to shake hands and speak with delighted well-wishers who cheered and clapped as the royals stepped out.

As Charles made his way along, one royal fan from Australia had a cheeky request for the King.

As he approached the crowd, the eager female fan was quick to grab his attention, telling him how she had met him “a few years ago”, but it was her later offer that left the monarch laughing.

As Charles shook outstretched hands in front of him, the fan said: “Thank you for coming sir. I met you years and years ago and I told you I come from Australia. It was lovely to meet you and enjoy your day tomorrow, sir.”

The King thanked her, before asking: “You’re not camping, are you?”

To which she replied: “I am, I’m just over there. Come and see me in the night,” to which the King chuckled loudly as he continued on his walkabout.

Elsewhere, William and Kate also chatted with royal fans who were gathered along the Mall, where the princess revealed she and William felt “like swans” while discussing how the couple’s three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – were feeling ahead of the big day.

Of the young royals, Kate said: “They’re really well thank you. Excited, a bit nervous, obviously with a big day ahead. But no, they can’t wait actually.”

When asked how she and William were feeling, Kate replied: “Yeah, all good. Hopefully, a bit like, sort of swans, sort of relatively calm on the outside and paddling on the inside.”

She was also asked how King Charles was feeling ahead of the big day, to which she said: “I’m sure he’s looking forward to it as well. It’s nice to be out here and saying hello to everyone who has obviously stayed out for so long.”

William also greeted well-wishers, reiterating his wishes for good weather on the Coronation day.

The prince spoke to one fan all the way from Phoenix, Arizona, who had been camping outside, and he congratulated the royal fan saying “Well done you” for her determination.

He added: “There’s not much sleeping going on out here. You’re sat in your chairs. I bet there’s a good party atmosphere here,” to which the fan nodded in agreement.

“Well I pray you guys stay dry,” the prince said, before moving on to greet other royal well-wishers who had gathered along the Mall.

Prince William’s prayers may go unanswered for dry skies over the Coronation weekend, for the Met Office issued a grim forecast for cloudy weather with intermittent showers on Saturday.

Forecasters are anticipating a 60 percent chance of light rain from 9am until midday on Saturday, with a further 80 to 90 percent of heavy rain until 2pm.

While the processions to and from Westminster Abbey and the proceedings of the historic service are unlikely to be affected by the poor weather, the traditional flypast could be scaled down or cancelled if the weather proves unfavourable for flying.

The Red Arrows are scheduled to take to the skies at 2.30pm, leaving the RAF to assess the forecast until the last minute on Saturday to see if the event can safely take place.
