CCTV images released after man and woman punched and abused in racist attack

Police have released images of three men they want to speak to in relation to a race hate attack which took place in Sheffield city centre.

A man, 55, and a 19-year-old woman were walking in Cambridge Street at around 6pm on Saturday when a large group of men began shouting racist abuse.

A physical confrontation followed where the man was punched in the face.

He did not need hospital treatment but the alleged crimes were serious enough for police to put a dispersal order in place allowing them to break-up gatherings in the area until 7am on Monday.

Police arrested two 27-year-old men, from Sheffield and Barnsley, but they were later released on bail while officers continued their enquiries.

Authorities are now appealing for help from witnesses.

Inspector Kevin Smith, the investigating officer, said: ‘This attack has left the victims extremely shaken and we need to make it very clear this this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated in Sheffield or across South Yorkshire.

‘Since the incident was reported we have carried out numerous enquiries including speaking to people who were in the area at the time, as well as extensive analysis of CCTV footage.

‘I’d now like to ask for your help to piece together the moments leading up to this incident. Were you in the area at the time? Do you have mobile phone footage? Do you know the men who are pictured?

‘If you know anything that may help us please get in touch, we really do want to hear from you.’
