Tear gas has been fired at crowds following Belgium’s 2-0 loss to Morocco at the World Cup.

The shock result has sparked huge riots in Brussels.

Police have sealed off parts of the city centre and deployed water canons and tear gas to disperse marauding football fans.

Unrest began during the game and continued long after 90 minutes was complete.

Dozens of rioters reportedly set steps on fire and pelted cars with bricks.

Officers moved in after one person suffered facial injuries, said Brussels police spokeswoman Ilse Van de Keere.

Brussels mayor Philippe Close urged football fans to stay away from the city centre and said authorities were doing their utmost to keep order in the streets.

Subway and tram traffic had to be interrupted on police orders.

Morocco’s victory was a major upset at the World Cup and was enthusiastically celebrated by fans with Moroccan immigrant roots in many Belgian cities.

It was not immediately clear how many people were detained during the disturbances.

Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech inspired Morocco to their 2-0 victory over the side currently second in the FIFA rankings.

Belgium’s final game in Group F will be against 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia on Thursday.
